The Latest Craze

I am sitting here listening to something that someone suggested that my hubby listen to. It's one of those "get rich quick" schemes and I just have to laugh. BUT, they do point out something that is true... this world is truly become an online world.

This particular scheme talks about the power of digital world. For me, a pastor, I am seeing more and more people look to the internet for churches, businesses, and interaction with people. This has been growing for more than a decade, but I am finding that you are really looked down upon if you aren't on Facebook (FB), MySpace, or Twitter! Now, personally, I am a real FB fan, but any of these are acceptable. I have even been caught stating that FB is a ministry!! LOL

But here's the reality. What was designed to be a fun place to go in your spare time is now becoming a time eater. When I used to look to the TV for relaxation, I am now spending on the internet, mainly on FB. As a matter of fact, if I'm on the computer for any reason - studying, sermon prep, email, school - more than likely you will find my FB page open. It has become my "non-brain work" when I am intensly studying and need a moment to process.

What I am finding more and more is that these social networks such as FB are now the latest addiction. I am the first to admit that I have a FB addiction problem. I think we should start a FB Anonymous support group! Many of my collegues are taking the FB or Twitter fasts (going without for a week or longer)! What is the world coming to? Being addicted to technology and the internet and FB is just the latest craze in our overindulgence. We, as humans, can't help ourselves but become enthralled by something... food, television, alcohol, drugs, sex, or FB... whatever it is. And too often, when we try to break one habit, we indulge in another! Why doyou think smokers, after giving up the habit, tend to gain weight?

Look, I'm writing this on a webpage, on the internet, and will probably post this link on FB, so it's not stopping. But, I was reminded today by a total stranger that we need to work harder to get our priorities in line. This stranger was clearing out his "Mobster" assets (a FB game!!) in order to focus on his priorities. He realized he was spending hours playing the game instead of in the areas he should be...

How about you? What are your time eaters? What is taking your time away from your family or even still from God? Maybe it's time for you to take a fast from FB or the television? Could you go a month? A week? A day??? Think about it... I know I will...

Your sister in Christ,
Pastor Heather
